Description

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire born goalkeeper Jack Eggett played for junior clubs Wolsoken Victory and Wisbech Town before joining Doncaster Rovers in 1894. In a FA Cup match against Rotherham Town in November 1895, which Doncaster Rovers lost 7-0, he was fouled by an opposing forward and, when he kicked him in retaliation, he was sent off and banned for six weeks. In 1901 he was still their goalkeeper for their inaugural season in The Football League, making his Football League debut in their first match against Burslem Port Vale that September (already aged 27) and being ever present during their first season, missing only one game in 1902-03. He joined Arsenal in the summer of 1903 but couldn’t dislodge incumbent goalkeeper Jimmy Ashcroft and moved on to Southern League West Ham United in January 1904, where again he was only a reserve. In May 1904 he joined Tottenham Hotspur where he made 74 appearances before losing his place during the 1906-07 season and joining Croydon Common in the 1907 close season. He made 19 appearances for Croydon including playing in their first FA Cup match and their first match as a professional club before joining non league Goole Town in June 1908.
