Lower Ince, Wigan born wing half George Wilkinson started his football career with local junior club Atherton in 1919 and spent 1921-22 on the books of Oldham Athletic, without making a first team appearance. He moved to Southport in the summer of 1922 and made his Football League debut against Wigan Borough that October, appearing regularly in the first eleven during his debut season. However he was increasingly occasionally used during his three remaining seasons at Haig Avenue, notable for his 7 goal spree when moved to the forward line in 1924-25 in only 14 games, including braces against Bradford Park Avenue and Doncaster Rovers. After 9 goals in 48 appearances he moved to non league High Park in 1928.
