Description

Burslem born inside forward Arthur Watkin played for junior club Hanley Swifts prior to World War One but after the conflict joined local Second Division professional club Stoke, for whom he made his first team debut in an FA Cup tie at Bury in January 1920. He didn’t get another opportunity until March but he then scored on his League debut in the derby match, a 3-0 win at Port Vale. His best season followed, and in 1920-21 he bagged 16 goals topping Stoke’s scoring charts, and the haul included hat-tricks against Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, and the next season his 8 goals helped Stoke to promotion to the First Division as Second Division runners up, albeit they were immediately relegated in 1922-23. After 4 seasons he joined non league Congleton Town for a season in 1923, but re-joined Stoke in 1924 for a further 2 seasons. After 42 goals in 141 appearances for The Potters, he re-joined Congleton Town in 1926 and left the professional game.
