Description

Morpeth, Northumberland born right back Robert Roxburgh played junior football for Morpeth Comrades in 1919 before joining First Division Newcastle United in November 1920, making his Football League debut against Arsenal in April 1921. He struggled to get into the Newcastle first team making 24 appearances over four seasons for The Toon, before joining Blackburn Rovers for £375 in May 1924.

At Rovers he was a much more regular fizture although he missed their 1928 FA Cup Final triumph having played in 3 of the ties leading to Wembley. losing his place in the first team at the beginning of April, although he did play in their FA Charity Shield defeat to Everton at Old Trafford in October 1928 when they lost to two Dixie Dean goals. He played his last game of 128 appearances for Rovers in February 1930 before retiring from playing professional football. After his retirement he coached in Holland before being appointed Leeds United’s assistant trainer in 1955.
