Description

Higher Broughton, Salford born inside left George Sapsford began his football career playing for South Salford Lads Club before the First World War and after the War joined Clarendon in 1919, from where he signed for First Division club Manchester United, making his Football League debut against Notts County in April 1920, one of a pair of appearances in his debut season. He had an extended run in the first team from the start of the following season and played 30 matches in United’s 1921-22 relegation season.

He was signed by Preston North End at the start of May 1922 after 17 goals in 53 appearances for The Red Devils, scoring twice on his Lambs debut as Preston won the last game of the 1921-22 season 2-0 at Birmingham, but his game time at Deepdale was limited and over the next four seasons he scored 9 goals in 36 appearances. After Preston’s relegation in May 1925 he joined Third Division (North) club Southport that October, playing two seasons at Haig Avenue and he was The Sandgrounders’ second top scorer in the 1926-27 season behind Harry Beadles, scoring 27 goals in 77 Southport appearances. This included 4 goals in a 6-0 win over Wrexham in October 1926, his only professional hat-trick before retiring from professional football in the summer of 1927.
