Description

South Normanton, Derbyshire born left half Arthur Roe began his football career with South Normanton Colliery in 1913, and enlisted in the 17th (Service) Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment), The Footballer’s Battalion on 16th December 1914, four months into the First World War. Having survived the conflict he joined Southern League club Luton Town in 1919, and when a year later they joined the Third Division he made his Football League debut in their inaugural League fixture at Swindon Town in August 1920, although they suffered a 9-1 reverse on the day.

He enjoyed nearly six years at Kenilworth Road scoring once in 97 appearances for The Hatters in their League seasons before joining First Division club Arsenal in May 1925, for whom he made his sole appearance in a 2-0 defeat at Bury on the final day of the 1924-25 season. But Roe’s contract was cancelled just nine days after that and he left the club that summer, joining Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic for whom he scored twice in 55 matches over the following two seasons, before joining Midland League Mansfield Town in 1927. Already 35, he scored once in 25 appearances for The Stags before his retirement in 1928.
