Description

Creswell, Derbyshire born left half Jim Plant (he could also play right or centre half) began his football career with Whitwell and Creswell Colliery and had then served with The Sherwood Foresters during the First World War, and was wounded, playing for Whitwell Discharged Soldiers before joining First Division club Sheffield United in 1919, making his Football League debut against Derby County in February 1920. He struggled to break into The Blades’ first eleven and during his time at Bramall Lane he was given a one match trial by Macclesfield in November 1922 but, at that stage, was not signed. He made 42 of his 65 appearances for Sheffield United in the 1922-23 season, when he was a member of their FA Cup semi final team which lost 1-0 to eventual winners Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford. He scored his only career goal in a 2-0 win over Newcastle in September 1922.

However he played only one further match, at Bolton Wanderers in September 1923 and suffered injury, being released on medical grounds in the summer of 1925  before joining Cheshire League club Macclesfield in the summer of 1926, scoring 3 goals in 37 appearances for The Silkmen during their 1926-27 campaign. subsequently playing for Worksop Town in 1927, Ripley Town from 1927 to 1929, Whitwell Old Boys in 1929 to 1931 and Whitwell Colliery in 1931 before his eventual retirement.
