Description

An England schoolboy international, Ryton-on-Tyne, County Durham born centre forward Tom Phillipson played in local north east football with Winlaton and Scotswood before the First World War, but after the War joined First Division Newcastle United for £500 in December 1919, making his Football League debut at Everton in January 1920, scoring 3 times during the rest of the season. However he struggled to get game time the following season and joined Swindon Town in May 1921 after 4 goals in 15 appearances for The Toon.

At Swindon he was a regular scorer over two and a half seasons at The County Ground and notched 26 goals in 91 matches before he was signed by Wolverhampton Wanderers for £1,000 in December 1923, going straight into the Wolves first team. He scored 12 goals that season as Wolves won the Third Division (North) Championship in May 1924, before going goal crazy in 1925-26 and 1926-27 with 37 and 33 goals respectively, including 5 goals against Bradford City on Christmas Day 1926, a 4 goal blitz against Barnsley in April 1926 and 5 other hat-tricks for Wolves during his five seasons at Molineux.

In March 1928 he moved back to the First Division with Sheffield United where he mainly played at inside right or inside left and managed 26 goals in 59 appearances over two years before joining non league Bilston United in 1930. He returned to Football League action in August 1931 with Walsall, where he made 7 appearances that autumn scoring 3 times before his retirement.
