Description

St Helens, Lancashire born left half Bill Luckett began his football career with Skelmersdale United in 1926 and after a trial with Liverpool joined Second Division Southampton in August 1927 as an outside left, making his senior debut in an FA Cup tie at Cardiff City in January 1928. His Football League debut followed a week later, playing outside left, and scoring twice in a 5-1 win over Notts County, and making 5 further appearances before the season end.

Before the end of the 1928-29 season he had switched to left half back, where he soon established himself, and he was an ever present in their 1932-33 campaign, scoring a career best 5 goals when deputising at outside left towards the end of the season. In late 1935 he picked up an ankle injury which allowed him to play only once more that season and in a final match in August 1936 before he was forced to retire after 10 goals in 219 appearances for Southampton.

After joining non league Cowes for a spell in the 1937 close season, he returned to The Dell as a reserve team coach after the Second World War, during which he served as a Physical Training Instructor in the Royal Air Force, and remained at Southampton for seven years before becoming the manager of O.S.O. F.C. in 1953. He managed Andover from September 1954 and Southampton Post Office from January 1955, finally becoming manager of The Ordnance Survey team in 1964.
