Description

Derby born full back Fred Flanders joined Derby County from local team Shelton United in 1910 making his Football League debut against Birmingham in October that year. He made 16 appearances that season for his hometown club being a regular starter from January till April but in 1912 he was released and joined non league Ilkeston Town, from where he joined Newport County in 1913, at that time a Southern League team who had only been formed the previous year. His first spell at Newport was interrupted by World War One and after the resumption of peacetime football he joined Mansfield Town, but in 1921 he returned to Newport County, by this time a Football League club and playing in the newly formed Third Division (South), making his second debut that August at Reading. He stayed only a season at Somerton Park, making 19 appearances, before joining Hartlepools United the following summer and playing 3 times only in the late summer of 1922 on Teeside before joining non league Nuneaton Town in 1923.
