Description

Irish born right half Tommy Dowling began his football career with Plumstead Hibernians after the First World War and played for Woolwich in 1920 from where he joined Southern League club Charlton Athletic. When The Addicks were elected to the newly created Football League Third Division in the summer of 1921, Dowling found a special place in the club’s history as, when making his League debut against Exeter City in August 1921 in Charlton’s inaugural League match, he scored their winner and first ever League goal in a 1-0 victory.

It would be his only goal in a mere 21 appearances over three seasons for Charlton, and in 1924 (like a large number of other professional footballers at the time) he took the boat to The United States to play in the nascent US soccer leagues, featuring for Indiana Flooring, Newark Skeeters and Calpe American throughout the mid 1920’s.
