Warrington born wing half Joe Cartwright joined Manchester City in 1913 from Northwich Victoria, making his debut against Everton that October. He played 39 times for City before the suspension of football due to World War One and played wartime football for City and also Leeds City, before resuming with City in 1919-20. However his first team opportunities were very limited and in 2 post war seasons he only made 8 further appearances, and brought his total goals scored for City up to 5, before he moved to Crystal Palace in the summer of 1921. He played 21 games for Palace scoring 4 times before moving to Welsh League Llanelly in 1923.
