Description

Glasgow born goalkeeper Pat McMahon began his football career with Pollokshaws Hibs and played for St Anthony’s in 1931 from where he was signed by Second Division club West Ham United in 1932, making his debut in an FA Cup tie with Birmingham in March 1933 in place of George Watson, and his Football League debut two days later against Preston North End, keeping the gloves until the end of the season. However Jack Rutherford took over the gloves the next season and McMahon made just 3 further appearances for The Hammers, joining Scottish League club St Mirren in May 1934, after 17 matches for The Hammers, playing in 25 matches for The Buddies during their 1934-35 campaign.

McMahon returned to Football League action when he signed for Third Division (North) club Wrexham in April 1035,  playing twice before the season end for The Dragons, and he was their regular goalkeeper for the next three seasons.being ever present in their 1937-38 campaign. However he lost his place to George Poland from the start of the next season and only played 3 more matches before a move to First Division club Stoke City in the summer of 1939 after 123 matches for Wrexham, and he played in all 3 of Stoke’s top flight fixtures in the new 1939-40 season before peacetime football was abandoned as the Second World War broke out in September 1939, effectively ending McMahon’s career. During the War McMahon moved back to Wrexham to join the Home Guard and also guested for the football club.
