Description

Dumbarton born centre half Willie Rankine began his football career with Parkhead Juniors in 1920 and played for Vale of Clyde in 1921 before joining Scottish League Dundee in 1922. While at Dundee he was selected to represent The Scottish League in a 5-2 win over The Irish League at Tynecastle in October 1926. Later the same season he signed for First Division club Blackburn Rovers, having scored 4 goals in 176 appearances for The Dees, making his Football League debut against Arsenal in April 1927, scoring in a 2-1 home defeat.

In 1928 he was part of Blackburn’s team that won the FA Cup beating Huddersfield Town 3-1 in the Final at Wembley. He continued as a regular in Rovers’ first team until 1931, before joining Second Division Charlton Athletic in March 1932 after 4 goals in 162 appearances. He made 26 appearances for The Valiants but when they were relegated in 1933 he left to join non league Burton Town.
