Description

West Bromwich, Staffordshire born right back Wally Webster began his football career with Wood End Juniors prior the the First World War, but after the War he played for Kingsbury Colliery in 1919 and West Bromwich United in 1920 from where he was signed by Third Division (North) club Walsall in January 1922, making his Football League debut at Ashington the same month. Straight away he became a fixture in The Saddlers’ first eleven, missing only 4 matches the next season as Walsall finished third in the division, and he only missed one match in their 1924-25 campaign.

After 3 goals, all penalties, in 137 appearances for Walsall, he joined Lincoln City in June 1925, but his consistency came to the notice of First Division club Sheffield United, who signed him from Lincoln in October 1925 after 12 appearances for The Imps. Webster was a fringe player throughout his five seasons at Bramall Lane, and he made 35 appearances for The Blades before a move to Midland League club Worksop Town in the summer of 1930.

He soon moved on to Scunthorpe & Lindsey United but returned to Football League action with Third Division (South) club Torquay United in June 1931, where he had two seasons, making 29 appearances, before returning north to join Rochdale in July 1933. He missed only 4 matches in ‘Dale’s 1932-33 campaign, making 40 appearances, before a move to Cheshire County League club Stalybridge Celtic in the summer of 1933, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
