Description

A mystery man in Newcastle’s 1908-09 team group is G Hardy, who hadn’t appeared in the 1907-08 squad photograph and who, I suspect, is misspelled and is George Hardie.

If so, George Hardie would have been around 35 years old at the time the photograph was taken, which fits with the evidence, however until we find a comparison image it is hard to confirm. Meantime of Hardie we know the following: Born at Stanley, Derbyshire, goalkeeper George Hardie began his football career with West Hallam around 1888, and played for Denaby Wanderers in 1893, Conisbrough is 1894 and Mexborough in 1895 before joining Second Division club Grimsby Town in 1896, for whom he made his Football League debut at Walsall in February 1897. He made 5 further appearances during the remainder of the campaign before returning to Mexborough in the summer of 1897. A year later Hardie returned to Football League action with Second Division club Lincoln City, where he made 12 appearances before the end of 1898 before losing his place in the side soon after Christmas. Lincoln City is his last recorded club.
