Born in South London, goalkeeper Obed Caygill was an early goalkeeper for Southern League club Millwall Athletic, from the late 1880’s until he was subsequently forced to retire due to a broken leg sustained in 1894, albeit it is possible he played again for Millwall during their 1895-96 campaign. Millwall won The Southern League Championship in both 1895 and 1896.
Asked in an interview in 1892 in English Sports, he said of the founding of Millwall: “A few tinsmiths, engaged on the island [of Dogs] were the founders. First called “The Iona” [a distinctly Scottish name!] it grew in importance till it reaches its current position. It still continues practically as a working man’s team, only one or two of its members being engaged in other occupations, such as clerkships.”
Caygill is credited with having scored an own goal in an FA Cup defeat to Royal Arsenal (the former name of Arsenal) in November 1892 in a match played in front of 12,000 spectators at The Invicta Ground in Plumstead, the first competitive own goal that Royal Arsenal had ever profited from.
