Description

Osmaston, Derbyshire born goalkeeper Augustus Beeby played for Ashbourne and District League club Osmaston from 1906 and after two seasons and joined Ashbourne Town in 1908 before being signed by First Division Liverpool in December 1908, making his Football League debut at Woolwich Arsenal in December 1909. Understudy to Sam Hardy, he played 5 matches for The Reds in the 1909-10 season as Liverpool finished runners up in the League Championship.

Beeby got a chance due to Sam Hardy’s damaged wrist at the start of the following season as well as for a second spell during November and December when Hardy was out again. Unfortunately for him Liverpool were going through a rather lean spell and he kept one clean sheet as Liverpool lost seven out of the 11 games in which he featured in 1910-11.

In May 1911 Beeby joined Manchester City, where he played 11 matches alongside fellow glovesmen Jim Goodchild and Walter Smith, but he left Hyde Road at the end of the season, joining Lancashire Combination club Tranmere Rovers, his last known club, and it is possible that he was part of their 1914 team that won the Lancashire Combination Championship.
