Description

Heaton Mersey, Cheshire born right back Charlie Chorlton began his football career with Brynn Central and played for Altrincham in 1905 before signing for Manchester United, spending 1906-07 on the books at Old Trafford without making their first team. After joining Denton in 1907 he signed for First Division club Bury in December 1908, and made his Football League debut playing at centre half in a win at Bolton Wanderers in December 1909, making two further appearances the same month. He scored a penalty for Bury in a 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa on Boxing Day 1910, one of a pair of appearances he made before the year end, but he was unable to establish himself at Gigg Lane and joined Central League club Crewe Alexandra in November 1911.

Charlton played for Crewe both sides of the First World War, and when they joined the Football League in 1921 he was a regular in their first League season making 34 appearances at right back, although he missed out on playing in their inaugural League fixture. He played his last match for The Alex in February 1924, already 38 years old, and having played 65 matches for Crewe during their League era he joined non league Nantwich before his eventual retirement.
