Description

Turton, Lancashire born centre half George “Tiny” Haslam began his football career after the First World War with Lancashire Combination club Darwen from where he was signed by First Division club Manchester United  along with John Howarth for a combined fee of £750 in May 1921, He made his Football League debut nine months later in a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City on 25th February 1922, his only appearance that season. In just over six seasons with Manchester United, Haslam made just 27 appearances for the first team, although he was a regular for the reserves, whom he captained to second place in The Central League in 1926-27. In his best season, 1925-26, Haslam appeared 11 times including both FA Cup fourth round ties against Tottenham Hotspur as United went to the semi-final.

In April 1927, for his loyalty he shared a benefit match against Sunderland with club veterans Lal Hilditch and Jack Silcock. Haslam was transferred to Portsmouth for a fee of £2,500 in November 1927, but left at the end of the season after just 4 appearances soon after he had joined before being dropped after a heavy defeat at Middlesbrough, returning to Lancashire to play for Cheshire County League side Ashton National in 1928. He became something of a North West non league scene journeyman in his later career, playing no more than a season for each of Whitchurch in 1929, Lancaster Town in 1930, Chorley in 1931, Burscough Rangers in 1932, and Northwich Victoria in 1933, his final club before his eventual retirement.
