Mansfield, Nottinghamshire born full back Charles Anthoney began his football career with hometown Midland League club Mansfield Town and was part of their team that won the 1928-29 Midland League Championship. He was signed by Third Division (South) club Northampton Town in the 1929 close season and made his Football League debut at right back against Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic that August, but he lost his place in November and played just three times more during the season run in. Switched to left back he missed only one match playing left back during The Cobblers’ 1930-31 campaign as they finished sixth in the division, but he was less regular during his final season at The County Ground, playing 25 matches before re-joining by now Third Division (North) club Mansfield in the summer of 1932 after 84 appearances for Northampton Town.
Anthoney scored his only two League goals during his single season back at Field Mill, both times in away matches at Doncaster Rovers and Chester, playing both sides for The Stags, missing only three matches during their 1932-33 campaign, however he then disappeared from professional football most likely through injury after 40 appearances for Mansfield Town during their League era.
NB the photograph was taken before the FA Cup tie between Walsall and Mansfield Town at Fellows Park on 26th November 1932. Walsall won the match 4-1. In front of Anthoney in the image is Reg Cropper.
