Description

Glasgow born centre half Jimmy Denmark started playing football with junior clubs Tollcross Clydesdale in 1929 and Parkhead Juniors in 1930 before moving to Scottish League Third Lanark in 1931. He became an important player in the Cathkin Park outfit’s line up and eventually transferred to Second Division Newcastle United for £2,550 in May 1937, making his Football League debut against Barnsley that September. Although he initially struggled for game time, making only 17 appearances in his debut season as Newcastle toyed with relegation to the Third Division, in 1938-39 he had settled into the team and played 34 times.

However the outbreak of the Second World War then forced the abandonment of the 1939-40 season after he’d played in the opening 3 games, and once hostilities had ceased, although still contracted to the St James’ Park club, he was rapidly released to join Queen of the South for £707 in March 1946 after 54 appearances for Newcastle United. He subsequently became the player-manager of Ashington in November 1948.
