Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester born left back Edward Dalton began his football career with Pendlebury, before joining Manchester United as an amateur in September 1905. He turned professional in January 1906, but it was not until 25th March 1908 that he made his Football League debut, and his only appearance for Manchester United, starting at left back in a 7-4 defeat away to Liverpool.
In August that year, he returned to Pendlebury for their second season in the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination but left a year later after Pendlebury resigned from the league, joining Southern League club Brighton & Hove Albion for a short spell, before returning to Lancashire later in 1909 when he joined St Helens Recreation. In 1910 he joined Chorley and played for Pontypridd in 1911, finishing his career with Vernon Athletic, who he joined in 1912
