Inverness born full back Alex Campbell began his football career with Inverness Clachnacuddin, joining First Division club Middlesbrough in August 1906 and making his Football League debut against Everton the same September. He made 26 appearances at left back in his debut season, but appeared 10 more times over the following two seasons, each time at right back. In 1910 he returned to Inverness Clachnacuddin before joining Second Division club Leeds City in December 1911. After a decent display in a Midland League game he made his only appearance for City against Nottingham Forest at Elland Road the same month, replacing Alec Creighton at left back in a 3-1 Leeds victory. Unfortunately, he sprained a knee after twenty minutes and had to limp off. He returned to the action after ten minutes, but his knee gave way again and he had to retire – he never played professionally again.
