Description

West Ham, London born goalkeeper George Hebden began his football career immediately after the First World War with Clapton in 1919 and played for Barking Town the same year, from where he joined Second Division Leicester City, making his Football League debut against Hull City in April 1921. Initially understudy to Herbert Bown, he broke into the first eleven on a regular basis from February 1922 and he was an ever present in The Foxes’ goal in 1922-23. However he lost his place in November 1924 to Albert Godderidge as Leicester won the Second Division Championship, Hebden having played 11 games in the campaign.

Having made 104 appearances for Leicester. Hebden joined Queen’s Park Rangers in the 1925 close season, where he spent two seasons, making 63 appearances, before joining Gillingham in August 1927. He was Gillingham’s regular goalkeeper for a further two seasons, making 75 appearances, before he returned to Queen’s Park Rangers in November 1929, making a single appearance for them in a home defeat to Southend United in February 1930 before retiring from football at the end of the season.
