Gateshead born full back (he could play both sides) and centre half Dick Young began his football career playing with Wardley Colliery Welfare and Hebburn St Cuthbert’s in 1934 before joining Second Division Sheffield United in November 1935, making his Football League debut at West Ham United in May 1937. From the end of 1938 he had a run of 15 matches during The Blades’ 1938-39 promotion season, when they finished runners up in the Second Division, and started all three matches in the 1939-40 season before it was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Second World War.

After the War he returned to Bramall Lane but struggled to find his place in the first team, making 10 appearances in 4 different positions towards the end of the 1946-47 campaign, but in 1947-48 he was their regular right back during August and September before settling in at centre half, making in total 33 appearances in the campaign. However The Blades struggled in 1948-49, and he lost his place in November 1948, making only three further appearances before being sold to Second Division Lincoln City in March 1949 after 80 appearances either side of the War for Sheffield United, but couldn’t help save Lincoln from relegation at the end of the season.

At Sincil Bank he missed only four matches in his first full season playing at left back, scoring his first career goal in a 2-1 win over Carlisle United in September 1949,and was then ever present in the same position in 1950-51. However he played only 9 matches in the 1951-52 campaign that saw Lincoln win the Third Division (North) Championship, and only five more matches over the following two seasons before retiring in 1954, having scored 3 goals in 106 appearances for The Imps. He later had a year between November 1975 and November 1976 as manager of Carlisle United.
