Alexandria, Dunbartonshire born centre half John Walker began his football career with Vale of Leven in 1888 before joining Second Division Grimsby Town in 1892, making his Football League debut in their inaugural Football League fixture, a 2-1 home win over Northwich Victoria. He made 19 appearances for Grimsby that season before joining briefly Gainsborough Trinity in 1893, returning to Football League action when he transferred to First Division Everton in the 1893 close season. But after playing in two of Everton’s early fixtures in September, home and away to Aston Villa, scoring on his debut in a 4-2 win at Goodison Park, he played only once more that November for The Toffees and spent another year in the reserves before joining Second Division Leicester Fosse in May 1895. He was a regular for four seasons at Filbert Street, ever present in 1895-96 and 1898-99, but he either retired or returned to Scottish football in 1899 after 125 appearances for The Fossils.
