Denny, Stirlingshire born right half John Steel began his football career with junior club Banknock before joining Scottish League club Hamilton Academical in 1921, for whom he scored 10 goals in 127 appearances over the next four years. He was signed by First Division club Burnley in the summer of 1925 and made his Football League debut against Sheffield United the same November, establishing himself as a regular in the first team over the next five seasons. After Burnley were relegated from the First Division in 1930, Steel fell out of favour at Turf Moor, playing only twice more at the start of the 1930-31 season, and left Turf Moor to re-join Hamilton Academical in 1931 after 5 goals in 152 appearances for The Clarets.
His wife Isa was the sister of George Sommerville, a teammate at both Hamilton and Burnley.
