Description

Carrington, Nottingham born centre forward Chris Staniforth played junior football for Creswell Athletic in 1915, Chesterfield Municipal in 1919 and Creswell Colliery in 1920 before joining Midland League Mansfield Town in March 1921, his first of five spells at Field Mill during his career.

He made his senior debut for Mansfield in an FA Cup tie against Walsall in December 1921, and joined First Division Oldham Athletic the following May for £400, making his Football League debut at Middlesbrough in October 1922. After two seasons at Oldham, in which they’d been relegated and he’d scored 8 goals in 37 games, he returned to Mansfield Town in May 1924, but re-joined the Football League ranks with First Division Notts County, signing for £800 in December 1924, playing two further seasons, scoring 8 goals in 39 games, until their relegation in 1926.

He returned to Mansfield in May 1926 for a third time, but a year later returned to Meadow Lane for a further £800 in May 1927, and had a successful spell at County, scoring 14 goals in 28 games including a hat-trick against Barnsley in November 1927, leaving him the club’s second highest scorer to Paddy Mills.

He returned once again to Mansfield in June 1928 before spells at non league Shirebrook in June 1930, where he was player-coach, joining Grantham in April 1931, but in the close season 1931 returned for the fifth and final time to Field Mill to re-join Mansfield Town as player coach, The Stags by now in the Football League, for whom he made 8 first team appearances, scoring twice. In August 1932 he joined non league Sutton Town and subsequently played for Worksop Town in August 1933 and returned to Creswell Colliery as player manager in the 1934 close season before retirement.

He won the Midland League Championship on three occasions during his career, with Chesterfield Municipal in 192o and with Mansfield Town in 1925 and 1929, and he is considered as something of a Mansfield Town legend having scored 152 goals in 160 matches in all competitions for The Stags.
