Description

Bury, Lancashire born goalkeeper John Wolstenholme began his football career with Bury Unitarians in 1899 before joining his hometown First Division club as understudy to Hugh Monteith. He made his Football League debut at Derby County in September 1905 and played 15 games, 12 of which came between September and November from which only three draws were mustered, before losing his place to Monteith.

He returned to the side in April 1906 and enjoyed 3 straight victories and all were clean sheets. He didn’t get another first team opportunity until Boxing Day 1908, by this time understudy to Jimmy Raeside, when he played against Aston Villa at Villa Park, and in the return at Gigg Lane on New Year’s Day, then against Sunderland at Roker Park two days later, all three games ending in defeats. His career after he left Gigg Lane is unknown.

NB this photograph was taken before a match at Nottingham Forest on 16th September 1905. Forest won the game 3-2.
