Description

Wednesfield, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire born centre forward Jack Sambrook played for Willenhall as an amateur in 1918 before joining hometown Second Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers after the end of the First World War in 1919, making his Football League debut against Hull City that December, scoring in a 4-2 victory. He scored 7 goals in 21 appearances over the next two seasons but didn’t feature at all for Wolves’ first eleven in 1921-22 before signing for First Division Champions Liverpool in August 1922.

At Anfield he deputised twice for regular centre forward Dick Johnson in the middle of the 1922-23 season. On both occasions Chelsea were Liverpool’s opponents, with the Reds sharing the points after a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge on 30th December 1922 before winning 1-0 at Anfield a week later. But at the end of the season he joined Stockport County where he played a single season in the Second Division, scoring twice in 19 appearances for The Hatters.

In the summer of 1924 he joined Third Division (North) Southport and in his two seasons at Haig Avenue he top scored both seasons, netting 34 goals in 71 appearances, including a hat-trick in his penultimate match in a 3-1 win over Halifax Town in April 1926 before returning to non league Willenhall in the 1926 close season, later playing for C & L Hills before his eventual retirement.
