Description

Denaby, Sheffield born wing half Levi Redfern began his football career with Bolton Albion in 1923 and played for Conisbrough Discharged Soldiers in 1924 and Denaby United in 1925, from where he joined Midland League York City in 1926. The Minstermen had an excellent season in 1926-27, they surpassed the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup for the first time and eventually they were beaten 2-1 by Second Division Grimsby Town in the second round. This bought Redfern to the attention of First Division strong men Huddersfield Town, who had won the League a hat-trick of times before finishing runners up in 1926-27, and they signed Redfern in April 1927.

He made his Football League debut against Leicester City in December 1927 and immediately became a first team regular, playing 23 League matches before the end of the season as The Terriers again finished League runners up. He also played 7 FA Cup ties as Huddersfield advanced all the way to Wembley, beating Sheffield United in a replay in the semi final, before losing the Final 3-1 to Blackburn Rovers. For three seasons thereafter Redfern reverted to a fringe role in the Huddersfield first team squad, although he was part of their 1929 FA Cup semi final team beaten 3-1 by eventual winners Bolton Wanderers at Anfield. In 1931-32 he failed to make a first team appearance whatsoever and he was released after a single goal in 63 appearances for Huddersfield, and after a trial with Doncaster Rovers he joined Second Division Bradford City in December 1932.

He was again a fringe player during his time at Valley Parade, making just 6 first team appearances before a move to Rochdale in September 1934. In a single season with ‘Dale, he scored 3 goals in 27 appearances, before returning to the city of his birth to join Sheffield United in August 1935. He made just 2 first team appearances for The Blades in the autumn of 1935 before leaving the professional game.
