Description

Wingate, County Durham born winger Tommy Yews began his football career with NER Athletic in 1920, and joined Hartlepools United in 1921, making his Football League debut that October against Walsall. His progress during 1922-23 was such that at the season end FA Cup Finalists West Ham United, fresh from winning promotion to the First Division, spent £150 for his signature in the summer of 1923. He stayed 10 seasons at Upton Park missing only 5 games between 1926 and 1930, Yews played in the high-scoring West Ham team that included Vic Watson, and Jimmy Ruffell on the opposite wing.

Such was his partnership with Watson and the sheer number of goals that Yews created for him, West Ham manager Charlie Paynter famously quipped of him “Tom could pick a fly off Vic’s eyebrows!”. He made a total of 361 appearances for the Upton Park club, scoring 51 goals. He left West Ham in 1933 and played three games for Clapton Orient that autumn before retiring.
