Description

Croydon, Surrey born outside left George “Lady” Woodger began his football career with Thornton Heath Wednesday as well as playing for Croydon Glenrose and Croydon Wanderers, also representing The Surrey F.A,. before signing for Southern League Crystal Palace in 1905, initially as an amateur, turning professional towards the end of the 1905-06 season. He played his first game for Palace in the United League against Grays United on 18th October 1905, a match which Palace won 6-1 with Woodger scoring one of the goals. He played a part in their 1-0 away FA Cup giant killing win against Newcastle United in the FA Cup in 1907. In some reports, Woodger was said to have provided the pass that led to the goal that was scored by Horace Astley. While with Palace he first came into England reckoning, being selected for the squad that played Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1908, although he was a non playing reserve on the day. His nickname derives from his elegant style of play, complimentary at the time.

Having scored 47 goals in 177 Southern League and FA Cup appearances for Crystal Palace, Woodger moved to First Division Oldham Athletic in September 1910 for a fee of £750, making his Football League debut at Woolwich Arsenal in a 0-0 draw on 1st October. His impressive form led to his again being selected for England, winning his only international cap when he played in a 2-1 victory over Ireland at The Baseball Ground, Derby, in February 1911. He had four seasons as a regular at Boundary Park and helped them finish in their all time high League position of fourth in 1913-14. He also played in their 1913 FA Cup semi final team that lost to eventual winners Aston Villa 1-0 at Ewood Park.

After 26 goals in 130 appearances for The Latics, Tottenham Hotspur signed him in on 13th May 1914, Oldham wanted £1,000, but the League ordered the fee to be paid £325. However Woodger never made a first team appearance for Spurs, only featuring in friendlies, and he retired during the First World War.
