Description

Originally a centre forward or inside left, Leadgate, County Durham born left half Jack Wilson began his football career with Leadgate St Ives in 1914 and played for Leadgate United in 1918 before joining First Division Newcastle United in May 1919, making his Football League debut at centre forward at Arsenal in August 1919. He scored twice in the return fixture in a 3-1 victory over Arsenal at St James’ Park a week later, but these were his only goals in 7 appearances for The Toon before he returned to non league football to play for Leadgate Park in the summer of 1920.

In February 1922 he returned to Football League action joining Third Division (North) Durham City, scoring 5 goals in 9 appearances before the end of the season including a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Halifax Town before signing for Second Division Stockport County in June. It was at Stockport that he converted to left half late in 1923, also occasionally playing left full back, however his four seasons at Edgeley Park ended in relegation in 1926, whereupon he was signed by First Division Manchester United in September 1926 after 12 goals in 134 appearances.

He had six seasons at Old Trafford but after their relegation in 1930-31 he lost his place in the first team in October 1931, playing only twice more for the club, and having scored 3 times in 140 appearances he moved to Bristol City in June 1932, where he played a single season, making 21 appearances for The Robins, before retiring in 1933.
