Cramlington, Northumberland born right half Bobby Willis began his football career with local junior club Shankhouse, and played for Blyth Spartans in 1919, from where he was signed by Scottish League club Dundee in 1921. He had two years with The Dark Blues before a return to England where he joined Third Division (North) club Rochdale in July 1923, making his Football League debut against Durham City that August, missing just 3 matches in their 1923-24 campaign, when he scored his only career goal in a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra in December 1923. He remained a regular for ‘Dale until losing his place in September 1925 after 67 appearances, joining Halifax Town in August 1926 for whom he made just 2 appearances that December. He later returned to Rochdale in 1927 but didn’t play again for the first eleven.
