Watford born inside forward Reg Williams had been on Watford’s books as an amateur in 1945 before joining Chelsea in the 1945-46 season, and was already nearly 24 by the time he made his debut in an FA Cup tie against Leicester City in January 1946, having lost the early years of his career to the Second World War. His Football League debut came in August 1946 in a 4-3 win over Bolton Wanderers, but he was never a regular in the Chelsea first eleven, in his best season he made 25 first team appearances in 1949-50. He featured in the first six League seasons after the War, and when he retired in 1952 he had scored 17 goals in 74 appearances.
