Wath-on-Dearne, Yorkshire born outside left Jack Wilkinson had played for Yorkshire Schools and played for Dearne Valley Old Boys in 1923, joining Wath Athletic in 1924 before signing for First Division Sheffield Wednesday, making his Football League debut in a 2-0 home win over Hull City in April 1926, scoring the second goal. He scored two further goals in 6 more games before the end of the season as Wednesday won the Second Division Championship, and he was a regular in their first season back in the top flight as they finished in 16th place, scoring 8 goals in 41 appearances during the campaign. But he lost his place in the Wednesday first team in February 1928 and played only 7 times in the two seasons that saw back to back League Championship successes in 1929 and 1930.
In May 1930, after 17 goals in 79 appearances for Wednesday, he joined Newcastle United for a £3,000 transfer fee, having a single season at St James’ Park, scoring 7 goals in 32 appearances for The Magpies, before joining Second Division Lincoln City in September 1932 for £600, where he was a regular feature in their first team. Despite Lincoln’s relegation in 1934 he stayed at Sincil Bank and by the time he joined Sunderland in January 1935 he had scored 21 goals in 97 appearances for The Imps. He provided squad cover at Sunderland but never appeared for the first eleven, and moved on to join Hull City in October 1936, scoring twice in 18 appearances for The Tigers before a move to Midland League Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1937, finishing his career at Burton Town, who he joined in 1938.
