West Hallam, Derbyshire born left back Jack Whitworth played for junior clubs West Hallam in 1919 and Ripley Athletic in 1920 before joining Third Division (North) club Chesterfield in 1921, making his Football League debut against Stalybridge Celtic that September in what was Chesterfield’s first season back in the League since 1908. He was a regular in The Spireites’ line up for two seasons, making 60 appearances before leaving the club in the summer of 1923. Although he spent 1923-24 at non league Shirebrook, he returned to Chesterfield for a second spell of two further seasons, although he was a fringe player and only added 3 first team appearances to his previous total. In 1926 he joined Midland League club Newark Town, his final known club before his eventual retirement.

His son George Whitworth joined Liverpool in 1950 played 9 First Division matches for Liverpool in 1951-52 before being forced to retire from the game in October 1952 due to a knee injury.
