Ecclesfield, Sheffield born winger Arthur Watson began his football career with Rotherham Swifts in 1891 before joining Second Division Sheffield United in 1892, making his Football League debut at Bootle in September 1892 and helping The Blades to their first promotion, as they finished runners up in the Second Division. Watson then played in the test match where they beat Accrington 1-0 to seal promotion in April 1893. He made no appearances at all during 1893-94 but returned to the first team in September 1894 and was a regular for the next two seasons before leaving United in 1896 after 16 goals in 67 appearances.
