Description

Cardiff born left winger Freddie Warren began his career at his home town First Division club Cardiff City whom he’d joined from Whitchurch in 1927, making his Football League debut at Aston Villa in April 1928, and spending time as understudy to George McLachlan before becoming a more regular first team player during Cardiff’s relegation season of 1928-29. Warren made his debut for Wales on 2nd February 1929, scoring in a 2-1 win over Ireland in the 1929 British Home Championship. Four months later, during the summer of 1929 Warren was selected for the Football Association of Wales Tour of Canada but these matches were not classed as international cap matches, albeit an individual honour. His Cardiff City teammates Len Davies, Fred Keenor and Walter Robbins were also selected for the Tour.

In January 1930, after 8 goals in 38 appearances, he was sold to Division One side Middlesbrough for a fee of £8,000, in a transfer that also involved Joe Hillier and Jack Jennings, where he was a regular performer in a ‘Boro team that generally struggled in the Division. After 50 goals in 164 appearances over six years with Middlesbrough, Warren joined Heart of Midlothian in the summer 1936, making his Hearts debut that August at Dunfermline in a 5-2 win, where he later became the club’s first Welsh international. During his career, he earned 6 caps for Wales over a period of nine years, scoring three times with all three being scored in matches against Ireland at the Racecourse Ground. He remained at Tynecastle until the outbreak of World War Two, returning to South Wales to work for Barry Town after 37 goals in 118 appearances for The Jambos.
