North Shields born full back Joe Walton joined Wallsend Park Villa in 1902 before spending time on the books of Sheffield Wednesday in 1903-04, without featuring for their first eleven. In 1904 he joined Southern League New Brompton and developed a reputation as a steady performer, before a transfer to Second Division Chelsea in the summer of 1906, where he made his Football League debut against Glossop that September. Although a regular during his first season at Stamford Bridge he found it difficult to get into the first team thereafter, spending four seasons on the fringes and making 53 appearances before joining Barry Town in 1911. After the First World War he joined Southern League Swansea Town in 1919, playing a single season at the Vetch Field before joining Bridgend Town in 1920.
