Description

Ashley Down, Bristol born goalkeeper Frank Vallis joined Horfield United of the Bristol Suburban League in 1918 and from there, after a trial match against Bristol Rovers in April 1919, playing four more wartime games before he signed professional forms for Second Division Bristol City in the summer of 1919, making his Football League debut against Bury that August. He was ever present for the first two post-war seasons of peacetime football and a member of City’s 1920 FA Cup semi final team which lost 2-1 to Huddersfield Town at Stamford Bridge.

Although City were relegated in 1921-22 they bounced straight back as Third Division (South) Champions in 1922-23 with Vallis making 38 League appearances. However he lost his place in January 1926 to Billy Coggins and left the club at the end of the season after 236 appearances for The Robins, joining Merthyr Town in June 1926. But he only made 2 appearances for Merthyr in August 1926 before retiring from professional football.

His younger brothers Gilbert and Jack both played for among others Horfield United and Bristol City.
