Description

Stone, Staffordshire born outside right Billy Tompkinson joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1913 and spent 1913-14 on the club’s books without making their first eleven. He joined Southern League club Stoke City in November 1914 but only managed one appearance during the 1914-15 season which came in a 4-2 win at Welsh side Mid Rhondda in April 1915.

Soon his career was interrupted by the onset of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, and during the War Tompkinson served in the Army. At the conclusion of the conflict he returned to Stoke, who were re-elected to the Football League’s Second Division. However Tompkinson only played once for Stoke in 1919-20, however, making his Football League debut at Bury in February 1920, and he moved to Southern League club Aberdare Athletic in June 1920.

When Aberdare joined The Football League a year later he played 26 matches in their inaugural League campaign and after 4 goals in 47 appearances for Aberdare he joined Rochdale in June 1923, playing five seasons for Dale, helping them twice finishing runners up in the Third Division (North) in 1924 and 1927, with Tompkinson scoring 45 goals in 167 appearances before a move to Stockport County in May 1928.

At Edgeley Park Tompkinson enjoyed two further seasons and enjoyed his best goalscoring returns, again finishing Division Three (North) runners up with Stockport both seasons, scoring 27 goals in 82 appearances before joining non league Connah’s Quay & Shotton in August 1930 and transferred to Macclesfield Town in December the same year, for whom he scored 9 goals in 27 Cheshire League and cup appearances. He signed for Rossendale United in the summer of 1932, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
