Normanton, Leicestershire born goalkeeper Jimmy Thraves began his football career with Notts St John’s in 1889 and joined Football League club Notts County in 1890 as understudy to George Toone, making his debut in an second round FA Cup tie against Burnley in January 1891, his Football League debut coming against Burnley 11 days later in early February. Of his 7 appearances in his debut season, five were in FA Cup ties, culminating with him playing in the 1891 FA Cup Final when Notts County were beaten 3-1 by Blackburn Rovers at The Kennington Oval.

He made two further appearances for The Magpies the following season and none in the two seasons thereafter, before joining Second Division Leicester Fosse in the summer of 1894. He was an ever present in his first two seasons for The Fossils, but lost his place in February 1897 to Arthur Howes and joined non league Long Eaton Rangers that summer after 94 appearances for Leicester.
