West Stanley, County Durham born inside forward Arthur Thomson began his football career with West Stanley in 1926 and joined Morecambe in 1927 before signing for First Division Manchester United in May 1928. He made his debut in an FA Cup tie against Bury in January 1929, his only appearance of his debut season, and his Football League debut in a 3-3 draw at Everton in March 1930. He remained on the fringes and played 3 further matches in January and February 1931, scoring on his final appearance for United in a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal at Highbury before joining Southend United in August 1931.
Thomson scored 6 goals in 16 appearances for The Shrimpers as Southend finished third in the Third Division (South) in 1931-32, but moved on to join Coventry City in the 1932 close season. He only played once for Coventry, in a defeat at Luton that September, before leaving for Tranmere Rovers in 1933. He spent 1933-34 at Prenton Park but didn’t make their first eleven, before re-joining non league Morecambe in 1934, where he finished his career.
