Description

Chadderton, Lancashire born winger Jimmy Thompson began his football career with Bradbury’s Works of Oldham in 1915 and the same year played for Chadderton. In 1916 he played for Hollinwood Amateurs and he then joined Oldham Athletic, still as an amateur, in January 1917. After the First World War he made his Football League debut in a First Division match against Newcastle United in January 1920, one of two fixtures he played for The Latics in a week. In August 1920 he joined Manchester City but only appeared twice for their first team in the second half of the 1920-21 season, before a move to Stalybridge Celtic in June 1921. He was the club’s joint second top scorer in 1921-22 with 11 goals in 37 appearances, scoring a hat-trick in their inaugural League fixture against Chesterfield in a 6-0 victory in August 1921. But he stayed only a single season joining non league Ashton National the following summer.

He returned to Football League action signing for Port Vale in January 1923, scoring three times in 8 appearances before a move to Blackpool in June 1923, where he scored once in only 6 appearances in 1923-24. A move to Accrington Stanley followed in June 1924, and he was an ever present for Stanley during the 1924-25 season scoring 9 times in 46 appearances. A move to Swindon Town followed in June 1925, but he scored only once in 7 appearances for The Robins, before finishing his senior career with Crewe Alexandra, joining them in July 1926 and scoring 4 goals in 34 appearances over a single season at Peel Park. He joined non league Hurst in 1927 spending 6 years there before joining Wilson’s Brewery in 1933, where he finished his career.
