Newcastle born full back Bob Thompson started his football career with Blaydon in 1908, playing for Swalwell in 1909 and Scotswood in 1910 before joining Second Division Leicester Fosse in the 1911 close season, for whom he made his Football League debut at Nottingham Forest that September. He made 9 appearances in his debut season and a further 19 appearances in 1912-13 before being signed by First Division Everton in the summer of 1913. He played 31 times in his first season at Goodison Park and then appeared 38 times as Everton won the 1914-15 League Championship and also made the FA Cup semi final, with Thompson in the side which lost to Chelsea at Ewood Park. After the First World War he resumed with Everton but was a fringe player for 2 seasons, making 20 further appearances, before joining Millwall in the close season of 1921. He played only 9 times during his single season at The Den before returning to Merseyside to join Tranmere Rovers, but again he only played a single season at Prenton Park scoring 5 times in 36 appearances before retirement in 1923.
