Hebburn, County Durham born winger Jim Thackeray began his football career with hometown club Hebburn Argyle in 1903 before joining First Division Middlesbrough in 1904, for whom he made his Football League debut against Manchester City the same October. He kept his place in the first team for most of the rest of the season and was a consistent performer during his six seasons at ‘Boro, during which time he scored 18 goals in 170 appearances. He transferred to Second Division Bradford Park Avenue in the close season of 1910 but stayed only a single season at Park Avenue, scoring 4 times in 35 appearances before joining non league West Stanley in 1911.
