Description

Nottingham born goalkeeper George Streets began his football career with Nottingham St Margaret’s in 1910, playing for Raleigh Athletic in 1911 before joining Mansfield Mechanics in 1912. He joined First Division Sheffield Wednesday in 1913 as understudy to Teddy Davison and made his Football League debut at Bolton Wanderers in September 1913, one of two appearances he made that season for Wednesday. He didn’t play at all in 1914-15 and his career was interrupted by The First World War, but after the conflict he joined First Division Notts County, where he vied for the goalkeeping gloves with the legendary Albert Iremonger.

He had 9 seasons at Meadow Lane, making 142 appearances, most of which were in the Second Division after County’s relegation in 1920. He played 23 games as The Magpies won The Second Division Championship in 1922-23, and 35 times in 1926-27, his most productive season for first team appearances, by when Notts were back in the Second Division. He joined Boston Town in 1928 and finished his career with Newark Town, who he joined in 1929.

NB This photograph was taken on 7th February 1920 v Bradford Park Avenue at Meadow Lane, Notts lost the match 2-0. Jack Foster joined Luton Town at the end of the 1919-20 season, which confirms that the 1920-21 label at the bottom of the image is incorrect. The three players, including the other Notts County goalkeeper Albert Iremonger, standing “behind” were not part of the line up and have been “doctored” into the image.
